Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy involves locating the truncal varicosities (varicose veins) on the legs using ultrasound. The majority of these veins are deep to the skin and difficult to see when lying down.
Foamed sclerosant solution is injected into the veins with the intent of making the veins go into spasm and to clot. This is performed precisely under ‘direct’ vision using ultrasound making it clear that all veins have been fully treated.
Immediately the treated veins shrink.
Over the week following the treatment there will be tenderness and inflammation along the course of the vein, this indicates that the treatment is working.
It takes a further 3-6 months for the lumpiness/vein to completely disappear.
